About Department
Biotechnology is a set of powerful tools that employ living organisms to make or modify products, improve plants or animals or develop microorganisms for specific use. Biotechnology is research oriented science, combination of Biology and Technology. It covers wide variety of subject like Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Chemistry and Genetic Engineering. It also has tight link and relationship with many other subjects like Health and Medicines, Agriculture and Animal husbandry, Cropping system and Crop management, Ecology, Cell biology, Soil Science, and Soil conservation, Biostatistic, Bioinformatics, Seed technology and so on. Keeping in view outlay and applications of biotechnology in every field to accomplish the eternal demand for resource personnel with specialization in biotechnology, the college established Department of Biotechnology in 2009.The Department started various programs i.e. B.Sc. in 2009, M.Sc. in 2018 and Ph.D. in 2023 in Biotechnology. Department is currently affiliated to Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil University. The department has sate of art instrumental facility,ICT enabled classrooms, experimental field plots and highly qualified faculty. Department runs three year diploma course titled as ,Plant Tissue Culture, for Undergraduate students and two year advanced diploma course titles as Bioinstrumentation. Along with department also runs skill courses E-Banking Assistance for B.Sc. I, Biotechnology Marketing Assistant for B.Sc. II and Biotech Industry Customer Relationship Assistant for B.Sc. III. Department also runs value added, Add on, Capsule courses for UG students. The department has produced good civilians and is proud of its alumni which hold good positions in industries, academia and research institutes at national and international levels. Vision, Mission and Goal: Vision: To be a Centre of Excellence in Field of Biotechnology Education, Research, Training and Entrepreneurship Guided by sound Scientific Principles and Quality Teaching. ?Mission: To develop a strong biotechnology program based on quality education, research and training. To impart quality education to the students and enhance their skills which will make them globally competitive. To develop trained biotechnology professionals who can contribute to the continuous improvement of biotechnological services and products. To develop scientific and/or technical resources as per biotechnology industry demands. Goal: To launch the academic courses, viable technologies create skilled biotechnologist for the benefits of students, rural and industrial fraternity. Strength of Department: Strength Consistency in results (over 98%) Fully Equipped Laboratories contained advance instruments Digital and ICT enabled Classroom Computer Lab with Internet connection Plant tissue culture Laboratory, Hydroponics unit, Experimental field plots Guidance for different Competitive Exams Active Participation of students in research, curricular and co-curricular programs. Highlights of Department: The Department has well equipped laboratories for B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. students. A separate computer laboratory is available for students for internet access. A hydroponics facility is available for students. The department organizes seminars/workshops/webinars for college teachers as well as for improvement of students of biotechnology. Moreover, some of the faculty members served as resource person/chairpersons in the aforesaid programmes. The department organizes state level intercollegiate competition (oral, poster & model presentations) for B.Sc. and M.Sc. biotechnology students every year. Department got Best Department Award in 2017-18 and 2023-24. Our alumni are placed at different companies in different sectors like Food, Pharmaceutical, Agricultural, Biofertilizer, Environmental Biotechnology, etc. Best Practices: Bioresonance: Unique feature of this activity is to encourage the graduate students for oral present ation of their research work. This helps the students to develop communication and presentation skills at graduate level. This encourages the students to do research. Every year students from the graduation do small research projects. However most of the students do not get the platform to present their basic research work at graduate level. In this activity a B.Sc. Part I student is motivated by a guest lecturer in the session I. This helps him to build a research idea forworkin successive years. B.Sc. Part II students come upwith some basic idea and present the poster ormodel in the competition. B.Sc. Part III, M.Sc. I and M.Sc. II students who have already come up from this procedure are encouraged for the oral presentation of their work. Future Plans: To enhance the participation of students and faculty in publishing research articles on their projects. To establish MoU, research linkages and collaborations with renowned organizations.2
