About Department
The Chemistry Department holds a significant position within our institute, being the largest department not only within the college but also within the Shivaji University area. Since its establishment in 1958 as a part of Chhatrapati Shivaji College Satara, it has been dedicated to imparting chemical education to students and fulfilling the diverse needs of the nation. Originally established within Chhatrapati Shivaji College Satara, the department later separated when the science stream evolved into the Yashavantrao Chavan Institute of Science. Over the past 60 years, the department has played a vital role in producing hundreds of chemists, educators, researchers, and individuals contributing to the nation's welfare in various capacities. In response to evolving educational demands, the department initiated M.Sc. programs in Organic Chemistry in 2008 and Physical, Inorganic, and Analytical Chemistry in 2020. In 2023, the department implemented the NEP for both UG and PG students, incorporating various SEC, VEC, IKS, RM, RP, OJT, etc., into the syllabus. Additionally, the department hosts a recognized Research Centre in Chemistry, where numerous researchers have pursued their Ph.D. work under the guidance of faculty members, some of whom serve as Ph.D. guides and one faculty member as a Raman fellow. The faculty members of the department are actively engaged in research across various fields, with many of them having published frequent research papers in reputed national and international journals. The department has also successfully organized numerous national and international conferences and seminars, further enriching the academic discourse. Additionally, several faculty members have completed both minor and major research projects, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the field of chemistry.
